The most 'scientifically accurate' way to achieve the effect would be to shoot on film with a worn movement in a camera that does not have double-claw pull down.or you could purposely introduce movement during the telecine scan. You could possibly keyframe your clips to have this motion with a Bézier curve to mimic the effect with the inbuilt motion control tab within Premiere. Gate Weave is primarily a horizontal motion (like a soft sway left and right) that can have different speeds. Or you could try and see if you can customise the parameters in this free camera shake plugin: It can also be caused by a worn mechanical movement in the camera not keeping perfect registration with the sprockets on the negative or by the film itself being warped by heat.Ī good plugin for exactly this (and other old film effects) for Premiere/AE is Red Giant's Misfire: Over time, a film can become warped or the sprockets can wear, causing the frame to appear to move side to side. That is when a film frame passes through a projector, sprockets outside the image area control the vertical motion of the frames through the projector. End viewers never even notice it.Sounds like you are describing 'Gate Weave'. It works much better than the smooth motion in FCP7, and the degradation is very minimal. It does crop in some in that mode, but not much, and in my case that was desirable. I used the Warp Stabilizer mode called 'no motion.' In that mode it makes the shot look like it came from a locked down tripod, rather than the gentle motion from the other mode. In fact the whole car was jiggling because of the high wind. No time for a tripod, and I had forgot the beanbag, so I just steadied the lens with my hand flat on the car and under the lens as much as possible. I had to park on a street with no parking, jump out of the car and prop the camera on top of the car and shoot without a tripod in between the traffic.

I was using the 5DII with the 70-200 f4 L lens zoomed in to 200mm. I have CS5.5 (will order CS6 later this week) and had a shot on a really windy day recently. I think Warp Stabilizer would do very well on that windy shot.
